Thank you, Chair
On behalf of Germany, I express our deep appreciation to delegations for their constructive collaboration, leading up to today’s adoption of this year’s resolution on the “Right to Privacy in the Digital Age.” Together, we have reaffirmed the importance of the right to privacy as a fundamental human right in a rapidly advancing digital world.
The new paragraphs to this resolution, notably the inclusion of language on artificial intelligence, underscore our collective commitment to addressing emerging privacy risks. AI brings significant opportunities, but also challenges that call for responsible oversight. Germany remains committed to a human rights-centered approach to AI governance, consistent with the goals outlined in the Pact for the Future including the Global Digital Compact.
We have also responded to requests from delegations to address the digital divide by emphasizing the need for adequate support to help developing countries implement these actions. This includes building capacity to uphold privacy rights effectively, as envisioned in the Pact for the Future.
The resolution highlights the essential role of private sector responsibility, urging companies to align data practices with human rights standards through rigorous due diligence. Equally, we value the strengthened emphasis on national independent authorities as they work to ensure transparency and accountability in privacy protections.
Finally, the draft reflects a focus on digital literacy, empowering individuals with knowledge of their digital rights and how AI affects them.
Germany is honored to co-facilitate this important resolution alongside Brazil. We believe this text strikes a sensitive balance, advancing privacy protection while fostering technological progress grounded in human rights.
Thank you.
