26.03.2025 - Speech

The statement was delivered by Ambassador Antje Leendertse, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations.

Mr President, Secretary General, Excellencies,

Germany aligns itself with the statement of the EU.

With the Pact for the Future, we gave ourselves a blueprint for reinvigorating multilateralism.
The adoption by consensus was a strong symbol of unity – we should jointly build on this.
The follow-up to the Pact and the realization of the 2030 Agenda remain top priorities for Germany.
They need to be implemented smartly, including the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration of Future Generations .

Mr President,
Let me highlight two focus areas of Germany’s contributions to the follow-up of the Pact, while we of course remain committed to all areas of implementation.

First: On 13 and 14 May, Germany will host the Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin.
This will be an important opportunity for participants to make pledges for peacekeeping, to underline their political commitment to effective multilateralism and to provide input to the SG’s review on the future of all forms of peace operations, which was mandated by the Pact for the Future.

Second: Germany remains convinced that investing in efforts to prevent violent conflict pays off.
In the Pact for the Future, we agreed on strengthening peacebuilding objectives, including national prevention strategies and peace financing. As Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission in 2025, and as the largest long-term donor to the Peacebuilding Fund, we will make sure to implement these objectives together with our Vice-Chairs and all PBC Members.

Mr President,
We need to maintain the momentum the Pact generated for reform – a reform towards a more just, representative and effective UN-System. This UN system needs to be as inclusive and transparent as possible; and fit to deliver on its core objectives, recalling its founding 80 years ago.

Let me close by saying that Germany remains strongly committed to the Pact and is ready to move implementation forward with all the other delegations.

Mr President, Mr Secretary General, we commend both of you for your tireless efforts toward making the Pact’s objectives become a reality.

I thank you.
