There are millions of people in dire need of cross-border assistance in Syria.
Once again the co-penholders presented a compromise proposal, purely based on objective humanitarian needs on the ground. This proposal had overwhelming support from Council members.
However, Russia and China chose to veto this purely humanitarian approach. We deeply regret this decision.
The Council must reach a solution to ensure this critical lifeline for the Syrian people. Germany and Belgium are committed to this end. We will continue to advocate for extending the legal basis underpinning cross-border assistance.
We call on all Security Council members to uphold their responsibility to the UN Charter, to this body and most of all to the Syrian people.
