The members of the Security Council were briefed by Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Bintou Keita, on the latest situation in Darfur.
The members of the Security Council condemned the recent intercommunal violence in El Geneina, West Darfur, which resulted in the death of several dozen civilians and the displacement of tens of thousands. They underscored the need for continued progress in the peace process and local mediation, peacebuilding efforts and economic development, in order to ensure sustainable peace and stability across Darfur.
The members of the Security Council also condemned the looting of UNAMID’s former headquarters in South Darfur. They welcomed the opening of an investigation by the Government of Sudan into the looting and urged them to take steps to ensure security and rule of law across Darfur.
They underlined their continuous support to the work of the Government of Sudan and commended the effort by Prime Minister Hamdok.
