As co-penholders of the humanitarian file for Syria in the Council, we would like to call upon all member states of the Security Council to vote in favor of our resolution. We went through a thorough and transparent process and came to a balanced text, trying to take into account the strong, yet diverse, voices of this council on this topic.
Our draft resolution the Council will vote on today is a purely humanitarian one. We have seen the humanitarian consequences of the offensive that is taking place in northwestern Syria ever since it started four months ago. So far it has resulted in the displacement of half a million civilians, as well as causing damage to medical facilities and civilian infrastructure. The UN has warned several times that Idlib could become the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. The Council cannot, must not, let that happen. It is our common responsibility as members of this Council, to take action.
