Biodiversity is our life insurance: It supplies clean air and water, food, building material and clothing.  It creates jobs and livelihoods. And, as the coronavirus pandemic has very clearly shown, an intact natural environment protects us from disease and has the power to heal.**

So it is also a way to prevent pandemics! This is why Germany intends to support two global initiatives: 20 million euros for UNDP BIOFIN to support countries that use the recovery from the impacts of the coronavirus to improve nature conservation, and 15 million euros to UNDP ICCA to support the most vulnerable population groups in the fight against the coronavirus and in the interest of nature conservation.

And we urge the next UN conference in Kunming to signal the clear intention to halt the destruction of nature.

I endorse – on behalf of the German Government – the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature and commit to take urgent actions so that united we can reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 for sustainable development.
